Presentations research

Posted by Jennifer on Apr 30 2008 | Presentations, Workshops. Media

I was doing a little research on putting together good presentations, from story-telling, to good use of power point, when I came across this gem to advertise a book about looking for work.  It’s clever, funny and effective — link from Presentation Zen.

Vancity AGM

Posted by Jennifer on Apr 29 2008 | Vancity

I attended the Vancity AGM on Tuesday evening.  It was a full house — great to see so many people there.  My friend Nancy Zimmerman watched the event on-line and blogged about it here:

http://nancyzimmerman.com/2008/04/22/econ-101-liveblogging-the-vancity-agm/

As a member of Vancity, I would prefer it if all members ran as independents with an objective set of information presented for members to make their choices.  (Mountain Equipment Co-op does a great job with this. )

I am grateful for all 6,104 members who voted “for” me.

squawkfox - great advice

Posted by Jennifer on Apr 25 2008 | Money

I was checking out Nancy Zimmerman’s links today (thanks Nancy!) and she directed readers to check out bloggers.  I spent a bit of time on squawkfox who has great advice about financial freedom.

http://www.squawkfox.com/2008/01/25/i-have-zero-debt-am-i-weird/

It took me a long time to learn these things!  The best advice is eliminating debt and always living below your means.

I was interested in the advice about renting as the situation now in Vancouver is somewhat unusual for a variety of reasons.  Having been a renter and a homeowner in Vancouver, I must say that I prefer being a homeowner as I had so many difficult situations with landlords infringing on my rights.

Fortunately, my husband and I have the same philosophy about money.  We are aggressive on our mortgage and carry no debt other than the mortgage.  We bought at a relatively good time and shopped around for the best rate we could get.  (Hurray to Vancity for being competitive and providing outstanding service!)  While I may not have the nicest clothes or shoes, I have the freedom to volunteer, participate on boards, and give back to my community.  We have both supported each other through job changes and career re-direction so that now we are both really happy with our work and our work prospects.

Thanks to you money bloggers out there!

A friend of mine has been involved in this campaign and told me about the video project to tell stories of evictions.

Local Theatre

Posted by Jennifer on Apr 18 2008 | Life in Vancouver

I met the producer of the play “A Life in the Theatre” earlier this week at Liberty, 21st and Main. The play is a production of a group from Maple Ridge.  The producer, Kathleen Hatley, grew up in Vancouver too and we had an amazing number of connections and common interests.

I saw “A Life in the Theatre”, a play by David Mamet, in London in 2005 — it was starring Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard) and some young guy from some TV show called Dawson’s Creek.
They will be peforming Friday (tonight) and Saturday at the Cambrian Hall at 17th and Main — 227 E. 17th.  Daniel and I are going to go on Saturday night.  We thought it would be fun to see friends and enjoy some theatre.  The tickets are inexpensive — $18 for adults.
For more information, visit their website:

For all you anagram lovers out there, emerald pig is an anagram for Maple Ridge.

Official results

Posted by Jennifer on Apr 13 2008 | Vancity

The results of the 2008 Vancity board election are posted here:

https://www.vancity.com/MyCommunity/AboutUs/MediaCentre/MediaReleases2008/April11/

While I may be a bit disappointed that I didn’t win, I received the most votes out of the candidates who ran as true independents.  I financed my own small campaign and ran it in the way that I want the board of directors to be elected at my credit union — as individuals who want to contribute and participate in the governance of Vancity.

It was a great experience and I enjoyed meeting so many members.  I’ll look forward to meeting more at the upcoming AGM.

Election news

Posted by Jennifer on Apr 09 2008 | Vancity

I received a call tonight from a member of the Vancity elections committee to tell me that I had NOT been elected to the board.

Full results will be available at the AGM on April 22.  I encourage all Vancity members to attend and learn more about your credit union and meet the new board members.

I enjoyed meeting so many people and had a lot of fun in this campaign.

Thank you for your support!

Voting is over . . .

Posted by Jennifer on Apr 06 2008 | Vancity

. . . and now we wait for the count.

Yesterday, I spent time at Fraser and 47th, then later at Victoria and 40th.  The returning officer at the Victoria branch told me that he noticed a big increase in the numbers of voters after people met us at the door.

There was a young girl of about 12 who was selling chocolate-covered almonds to fund an after school program.  I explained to her about the board and the election — and I told her that Vancity was a place that supported programs like hers.

All in all, it was an enjoyable experience meeting so many members.

Last day to vote!

Posted by Jennifer on Apr 05 2008 | Vancity

Today I will be in the SE corner of the city — 47th and Fraser, then Victoria and 40th.

Yesterday I was at my first home branch at Broadway and Waterloo.  I opened an account there in 1979.  I then walked over to the branch at 4th and Vine.

The response from people has been mixed.  Some are not interested. . . yet, others come out saying they voted for me because I was standing outside in the rain or the wind asking for their support.

A few people stop to chat and tell me things they would like to see improved.  I carry a notebook with me and write down everything members say.
